What official planning says

The National Security Strategy describes a more dangerous security environment and preparation for a possible direct threat to the homeland, potentially in wartime. The Resilience Action Plan work includes home-defence planning, revitalisation of and work to update government War Books, and further public preparedness activity.

The National Risk Register is a planning assessment, not a prediction. It describes risks that could affect energy, communications, supply chains, transport, public services and British nationals abroad.

Useful household preparation

• Make one household contact, shelter and evacuation plan that works offline.
• Build a modest rotating buffer of water, food, medicines, lighting, batteries and hygiene supplies.
• Enable Emergency Alerts and keep a radio plus written contacts.
• Plan for cyber disruption by keeping secure offline copies of essential information and recovery codes.
• Know the incident-specific guidance for hazardous materials, radiation, terrorism, power cuts and water outages.
• Keep passports, insurance details and accessible funds ready if you are abroad or may need to travel.
